How many of us wonder what effects soap operas have on marriages.
If you felt that soap operas were as harmful to families as pornography, would you commit yourself to avoiding soap operas, and would you stand by that commitment?
I did a search on the web and did not find any hard evidence or statistics linking soap operas to divorce rates. It would be interesting to perform a study on this.
However, there seems to be little doubt that entertainment has an impact on social values, and many have expressed concern over the effects of TV violence on children.
But, think about the whole experience of watching a soap opera and how closely it parallels those who view pornography. In one situation, people commit adultery vicariously. In the other, they model the worst, most selfish, most infantile relationship skills vicariously.
One concern I have is that people who become addicted to soap operas is that they practice and rehearse and program their minds deeply to live out soap opera lives with soap opera expectations.
I cannot help but believe that this may play a major part in raising divorce rates to the level they are today.
