We can Have the Right to Marry or the Right to Divorce, but not Both

Liar Pants on Fire
If you talk to a divorce lawyer or read what most of them write, you may find yourself told that in your state you have the right to get a divorce for any reason. It's the law.

But, just because our government says we have the "right" to divorce without cause does not make it so.

  1. The right to divorce implies the right to marry because without marriage, divorce is impossible. That makes sense. Right?
  2. The right to marry is, by definition, the right to bind.
  3. The right to bind is the right to deprive oneself of freedom to leave the marriage without a pre-established reason.

So, the baseline question is, "Which would you prefer? The right to marry or the right to divorce?"

There is nothing wrong with a couple committing themselves to marriage, putting their name and their honor and their family honor on the line to honor the vows faithfully as long as the commitment they make is sincere. But, sincerity of commitment can be measured by the courage and integrity a husband or wife has to accept responsibility and consequences for failure to honor the vows faithfully. And, yet a person who would lie or cheat or steal from the family and rend the hearts of little children for a roll in the hay could not possibly have the integrity or courage to take responsibility and consequences faithfully either.

So it is necessary for couples to submit their commitments to the accountability of an outside authority that has the honor and courage to hold the family accountable. After all, if someone lacks the courage and sincerity to submit to accountability, how can that be considered a commitment worthy of the status of marriage?

When we ask God to bless adulterous marriages, we are in essense asking the Lord to be the lead pimp in a brothel and turn heaven into a brothel, but that is exactly what many churches do today when they twist scripture and tell lies about what God is saying to the church about marriage and divorce. And God will hold us accountable for our faithfulness. God is not swindled, nor is He manipulated by the tricks of man.
